Making a point that we attribute Art Nouveau with the work of Alphonse Mucha because it’s HIS art style that keeps getting copied and redistributed in current art

raven4ever:

I mean I love Mucha’s art… it’s beautiful.

But WOW is he the only one people think about when “Art Nouveau” gets mentioned?

I’m gonna make a stab in the dark here and guess that it’s because his art style is the easiest to translate into both traditional and digital media.

I mean…

Look at the work of Toulouse-Lautrec.

and Aubrey Beardsley

All of them?  Yes, late 19th and early 20th century.  Art Nouveau.  And don’t get me started on the sculptors and the craftsmen of fine jewelry and furniture.  I could just fangirl for hours on Emile Galle and Hector Guimard.

So yeah.  Loads of amazingness from Art Nouveau.  But this seems to be all we think about when the art movement comes to mind:

Beautiful.  Absolutely beautiful.  But not the “be all and end all” of the movement by any stretch of the imagination.

But it’s the work of Mucha that keeps inspiring digital work today.  I mean look at all of the parodies of Mucha’s posters out there.  I own a t-shirt of Jareth (from Labyrinth) in a Mucha style.  I’m not seeing much current/digital homage paid to the other artists.  Really, it’s fascinating… that remixing in today’s culture actually dictates what we know of history.

((Sorry, Karina is having an art history geek moment because of dissertation work.))

Tumblr Art Historians!

I need your help! I’ve never had the chance to study Alphonse Mucha (and I don’t think I will be next semester either), and I would love to know what scholarship I can read about him - physical books or ebooks (my godmother seriously spoiled me and surprised me with a Kindle).

Pleaseplease

Love, Cassie
